Economy

The economy of Vietnam has transformed from agriculture to a service economy. More than a third of gross domestic product is generated by services, which include the hotel and catering industry and transportation. The manufacturing and construction (28 percent), agriculture and fisheries (20 percent), and mining (10 percent) have much smaller shares.

Since the late 1990s, the country’s economy has been on a vigorous upswing. Tourism has expanded, manufacturing and export earnings have increased, and the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) has grown rapidly. Early in the 21st century, state markets were opened to foreign competition, and Vietnam became a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Foreign-invested manufacturing is expected to lead Vietnam’s economy this year as it has over the past seven, country analysts say. Investors normally come mainly from Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. Their Vietnam factories make garments and auto parts as well as consumer electronics.

Tourism

Tourism is important in Vietnam. For backpackers, culture and nature lovers, beach-lovers, military soldiers, and veterans, Vietnam has become a new tourist destination in Southeast Asia.

Tourism contributes 4.5 percent to gross domestic product (as of 2007). After heavy industry and urban development, most foreign investment in Vietnam has been concentrated in tourism, especially in hotel projects According to a usual report of World Tourism and Travel Council, tourism contributed 6.6 percent to GDP equal VND 279,287 billion (03/2016) which has important contribution promoting the development of related sectors such as transportation, entertainment, cuisine, etc.

The most visited destinations in Vietnam are Ho Chi Minh City with 5.8 million international arrivals, followed by Hanoi with 4.6 million and Hạ Long, including Hạ Long Bay with 4.4 million arrivals. All three are ranked in the top 100 most visited cities in the world. Vietnam is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Southeast Asia. In 2018, Hoi An listed as one of the world’s top 15 best destinations to visit.
