Described as the place ‘where the sun rises’ and ‘the land of the living’, The Dilmun civilization was an ancient civilization situated in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It was one of the oldest civilizations in the world.

Bahrain, officially the Kingdom of Bahrain, is a sovereign state in the Arabian Gulf. The island nation comprises a small archipelago made up of 33 natural islands and an additional 51 artificial islands, centered around Bahrain Island which makes up around 83 percent of the country’s landmass. The country is situated between the Qatar peninsula and the northeastern coast of Saudi Arabia, to which it is connected by the 25-kilometer (16 mi), King Fahd Causeway. According to UN data, the Bahrain population is estimated at 1,701,575, of which around half are non-nationals. At 780 square kilometers (300 sq mi) in size, it is the third-smallest nation in Asia after the Maldives and Singapore. Manama is the capital and largest city.

Economy

Bahrain’s economy has long relied on processing crude oil from neighboring countries, and more recently the financial, commercial services, and communications sectors have grown markedly, as has tourism.

The economy of Bahrain is heavily dependent upon oil and gas. The Bahraini currency is the second-highest-valued currency unit in the world. Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has heavily invested in the banking and tourism sectors. The country’s capital, Manama is home to many large financial structures. Bahrain’s finance industry is very successful. In 2008, Bahrain was named the world’s fastest-growing financial center by the City of London’s Global Financial Centres Index. Bahrain’s banking and financial services sector, particularly Islamic banking, have benefited from the regional boom driven by demand for oil. Petroleum production is Bahrain’s most exported product, accounting for 60% of export receipts, 70% of government revenues, and 11% of GDP. Aluminum is the second most exported product, followed by finance and construction materials. In 2008 King Ḥamad had initiated a new economic diversification plan meant to reduce reliance on petroleum and boost Bahrainis’ disposable income. With its business and leisure tourism industry, aluminum-processing facilities, shipbuilding, and ship-repair industry, and the promotion of Bahrain as a center of Islamic banking, the country at the end of the first decade of the 21st century appeared well placed to thrive in a post-petroleum era.

Tourism

Bahrain enjoys a long and diversified historical and cultural legacy. Manama was nominated as the Capital of Arab Culture in 2012, the Capital of Arab Tourism in 2013, and the Capital of Asian Tourism in 2014. In 2013, the headquarters of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage under the auspices of UNESCO was founded in Bahrain. Bahrain Pearling Trail and Qal’at Al-Bahrain (Bahrain Fort) were two properties inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for the years 2005 and 2012, respectively.

The tourism industry in the Kingdom of Bahrain is growing rapidly and is expected to reach US$1 billion by 2020, according to figures released ahead of Arabian Travel Market 2017, which took place at the Dubai World Trade Centre April 24-27.

Bahrain witnessed an 8.4% increase in inbound traffic in the third quarter of 2016 and a peak of 1.4 million arrivals during August. With the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA) spearheading a robust marketing campaign, the Kingdom was expecting to welcome 15.8 million annual visitors by 2018. This will represent an increase of 36.2% on current figures and will place the country’s tourism industry on track to reach its $1 billion 2020 target.

Bahrain tourist attractions combine forts, museums, entertainments, mosques, shopping centers in addition to events and exhibitions.
