Niger officially the Republic of Niger is an arid, landlocked country in West Africa named after the Niger River with a population of 16 million. It is bordered by Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Nigeria, Chad, and Libya. Niger is a former French colony which was granted independence in 1960. The land is mostly desert plains and dunes, with rolling savanna in the southeast. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2 (490,000 sq mi), making it the largest country in West Africa. Over 80% of its land area lies in the Sahara Desert.
The capital and largest city is Niamey, located in Niger’s southwest corner.
Niger’s economy centers on subsistence agriculture, animal husbandry, re-export trade, and increasingly less on uranium, because of declining world demand. The 50% devaluation of the West African franc in January 1994 boosted exports of livestock, cowpeas, onions, and the products of Niger’s small cotton industry. Today the country is counting on increased oil exploration and gold mining to help modernize its economy. It has become noted as a major transit route for migrants heading to Europe.
