Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore is a sovereign island city-state in Southeast Asia. It lies about one degree of latitude (137 kilometers or 85 miles) north of the equator, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, bordering the Straits of Malacca to the west, the Riau Islands to the south, and the South China Sea to the east. The country’s territory is composed of one main island, 63 offshore islands and islets, and one outlying islet, the combined area of which has increased by 25% since the country’s independence as a result of extensive land reclamation projects. The country is home to 5.7 million residents, 61% (3.4 million) of whom are Singaporean citizens. Singapore has a total land area of 724.2 square kilometers (279.6 sq mi). There are four official languages of Singapore: English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil; with English being the common language. This reflects in its rich cultural diversity and extensive ethnic cuisine and major festivals.

Singapore is the largest port in Southeast Asia and one of the busiest in the world. It owes its growth and prosperity to its focal position at the southern extremity of the Malay Peninsula, where it dominates the Strait of Malacca, which connects the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea. Once a British colony and now a member of the Commonwealth, Singapore first joined the Federation of Malaysia on its formation in 1963 but seceded to become an independent state on August 9, 1965.

Economy

Though physically small, Singapore is an economic giant. It has been Southeast Asia’s most modern city for over a century. The city blends Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and English cultures and religions.

The economy of Singapore is a highly developed free-market economy.  Singapore’s economy has been ranked as the most open in the world, 3rd least corrupt, most pro-business, with low tax rates (14.2% of gross domestic product (GDP)) and has the third-highest per-capita GDP in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP). Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is the premier multilateral economic forum in the Asia-Pacific region, is headquartered in Singapore.

State-owned enterprises play a substantial role in Singapore’s economy. Sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings holds majority stakes in several of the nation’s largest companies, such as Singapore Airlines, SingTel, ST Engineering, and MediaCorp. The Singaporean economy is a major foreign direct investment (FDI) outflow financier in the world. Singapore has also benefited from the inward flow of FDI from global investors and institutions due to its highly attractive investment climate and a stable political environment.

Exports, particularly in electronics, chemicals, and services including Singapore’s position as the regional hub for wealth management provide the main source of revenue for the economy, which allows it to purchase natural resources and raw goods which it lacks.

Tourism

Tourism in Singapore is a major industry and contributor to the Singaporean economy, attracting 17.4 million international tourists in 2017, more than 3 times of Singapore’s total population. It is also environmentally friendly, and maintains natural and heritage conservation programs. Along with this, it also has one of the world’s lowest crime rates. Transport in Singapore completely covers most, if not all public venues in Singapore, which increases convenience for tourists. Singapore is the 5th most visited city in the world and 2nd in Asia-Pacific.

Singapore’s unique ethnic tapestry offers visitors a wide array of sightseeing and culinary opportunities. A full calendar of traditional festivals and holidays celebrated throughout the year adds to its cultural appeal. In addition, Singapore offers luxury hotels, delectable cuisine, and great shopping! Main tourist attractions include Orchard Road, Resorts World, Sentosa Clarke Quay, Gardens by the Bay, Botanic Gardens, Night Safari, Marina Bay Sands, and many others.

Singapore Changi Airport, commonly known as Changi Airport WSSS/SIN is a major civilian airport that serves Singapore and is one of the largest transportation hubs in Asia. It is currently rated the World’s Best Airport by Skytrax for the eighth consecutive year since 2013.
