Ukraine economy
Besides Russia, the Ukrainian Republic was the most important component of the economy of the former Soviet Union. Today, Ukraine’s economy is based on a multi-sectoral industry, agriculture, and services. Ukraine has made significant progress on reforms designed to make the country prosperous, democratic, and transparent, including the creation of a national anti-corruption agency, and an overhaul of the banking sector.

After attaining independence in 1991, Ukraine undertook inconsistent reforms toward becoming an efficient market-based economy.

Economic growth is not only about money and improved overall wellbeing for people. Of course, a higher standard of living is the ultimate goal of transformations. However, the path to this goal is comprehensive and methods can be not quite obvious.

A structural modernization of the economy, a tangible improvement of the business climate, an impetus for the development of the Ukrainian industry form a vital basis for a dynamic and inclusive growth that we plan to achieve with several comprehensive reforms to reach the goal.

To achieve this goal, the Government has to fulfill several key objectives, such as:

  • Creating a favorable business climate in Ukraine by making the market as fair and transparent as possible and reducing its regulation to the necessary minimum.
  • Promoting the Ukrainian industry nationally and regionally by encouraging the use of innovations and technologies in the manufacturing process.
  • Ensuring a profound reform of the energy sector, which will create conditions for Ukraine to achieve energy independence.
  • Getting rid of unprofitable state-owned enterprises that have turned into a heavy burden on the country’s budget by effectively managing the strategic assets.
  • Creating favorable conditions for agribusinesses by providing comprehensive government support to producers.
  •  Improving the quality and affordance of transport services in Ukraine, and improving the country’s infrastructure to make it modern and integrated into international transport networks.

Tourism

Ukraine is a destination on the crossroads between central and eastern Europe, between north and south. It borders Russia and is not far from Turkey. It has mountain ranges – the Carpathian Mountains suitable for skiing, hiking, fishing, and hunting. The coastline on the Black Sea is a popular summer destination for vacationers. Ukraine has vineyards where they produce native wines, ruins of ancient castles, historical parks, Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant churches as well as a few mosques and synagogues. Kyiv, the country’s capital city has many unique structures such as Saint Sophia Cathedral and broad boulevards. There are other cities well known to tourists, such as the harbor town Odesa and the old city of Lviv in the west. Most of Western Ukraine, which used to be within the borders of the Republic of Poland before World War II, is a popular destination for Poles. Crimea, a little “continent” of its own, had been a popular vacation destination for tourists for swimming or sun tanning on the Black Sea with its warm climate, rugged mountains, plateaus, and ancient ruins. Cities there include Sevastopol and Yalta – the location of the peace conference at the end of World War II. Visitors can also take cruise tours by ship on the Dnieper River from Kyiv to the Black Sea coastline. To food lovers, Ukrainian cuisine is well known for its delicious taste and offers a wide variety of original dishes.

The Seven Wonders of Ukraine are the seven historical and cultural monuments of Ukraine, which were chosen in the Seven Wonders of Ukraine contest held in July 2007. This was the first public contest of that kind which was followed by the Seven Natural Wonders of Ukraine, the Seven Wonderful Routes of Ukraine, and the Seven Wonderful Castles of Ukraine. All nominated sites are publicly owned protected areas of at least regional level, available for tourism.
